A brief summary of the newest V magazine...I don't really understand the point of having 14 different covers but anyway... (for the record I think Anja Rubik's cover is the best)
There are some good editorials in this issue. Firstly "The Eniko Story" by Inez and Vinoodh, featuring new model Eniko Mihalik. Warning: contains nudity.
"Chanel Iman on Ice" photographed by Will Davidson. I often dislike Chanel Iman's editorial work but here she delivers and the scenery is beautiful.
Tyra Banks and Sessilee Lopez, also by Sebastian Faena in "I called her mahogany". I find Tyra is a little too overposed here, but the colours work well and I love the "fake covers" image.
And I'm unsure the title of this, but it shows some beautiful colour combinations, shoes and tights.
Another fashion editorial that caught my eye recently... "Amour Fou" in the October issue of Vogue Germany photographed by Alexi Lumbomirksi. The reason I found this interesting was that it brought to mind gender roles in couples today and how they are becoming interchangeable. Using the same model (Magdalena Frackowiak) for both roles only highlights the fact that women can take on the traditional role of a man, both in fashion - I've seen a lot of androgynous clothes on the runways for this winter, and also in relationships. I also believe it hints at the gender roles adopted in same-sex relationships. On a personal level though, it reminds me of my own style - which can be a feminine dress one day, a business outfit with a smart jacket and trousers the next, and some loose fitting clothes for lounging around the house the day after.
More recent fashion editorials I am currently loving.
"Ghost Without a Shell" from Muse magazine (issue number 14) ; Agnete Hegelund photographed by David Vasiljevic. See pictures numbers 337-405. I love this, you can't go wrong with black and white! Agnete has been killing it in editorials lately.
And then there is the September issue of Vogue Italia, but that deserves a separate post!
Ophelia is a character who has always intrigued me. I was introduced to her through art - I've been visiting galleries since I was very young and the John Everett Millais painting (339) of her lying in the water, arms reaching out, is one of the most iconic and famous paintings in the world.
"Ophelia has become an icon for femininity in despair. Reduced to the
part of a pawn in a network of intrigues, abandoned by
her brother, abused by her lover and manipulated by her father, her
only way out is an excessive, histrionic display of vulnerability.
Lying forever on her back in a stream, flowers floating beside her, she
is perfected. No longer resisting the power play around
her, she will fulfil the destiny others have scripted for her." Source
I think my favourite Ophelia in art is actually the John William Waterhouse painting (338). I think he captures a foreboding feeling very well, as we see her sitting on the willow branch and looking on into the water. One thing that has always struck me about both paintings is the juxtaposition of the beautiful surroundings - a stream with flowers floating around her, and the tragedy of her death.
It was many years later when I was introduced to Hamlet. To be honest I was disappointed and I feel these iconic paintings far outshine Shakespeare's character.
I'm a huge fan of paintings being translated into fashion editorials, and this is no exception. Photographed by Oh Joong Seok and modeled by Wang Ji-Won, "Oh My Ophelia" shown in Vogue Girl Korea (april 07) beautifully capture the essence of Ophelia. See pictures 328-337
September looks to be a fruitful month for magazines. Here are two beautiful editorials from 'Another Magazine' . Firstly a black and white editorial photographed by Willy Vanderperre featuring model Natasha Poly dressed for winter by the sea. (See pictures 302-316)
In contrast, the second editorial by Craig McDean is an explosion of colours and almost surreal effects. (See pictures 317-327)
I love both editorials and the two different styles of photography.
